Como formar: the -est e the most

  • Uma sílaba: the + adjetivo + -est (the fastest, the oldest). A ortografia repete a do comparativo: safe → the safest, thin → the thinnest.
  • Duas sílabas terminadas em -y: o y vira -iest (the funniest, the noisiest).
  • Duas sílabas ou mais, em geral: the most + adjetivo (the most useful, the most reliable).

  • Who is the most reliable supplier you work with?

Irregulares e the least

  • Our goalkeeper is the best in the league.Nosso goleiro é o melhor do campeonato.
  • Which route is the least crowded in the morning?Qual trajeto é o menos movimentado de manhã?

A preposição depois do superlativo: in ou of

  • in quando o que vem depois é um lugar ou um grupo (país, cidade, turma, empresa, família): in Europe, in the office, in my family, in the league.
  • of quando é um período de tempo ou um conjunto contado de itens, muitas vezes com número ou all: of the decade, of my career, of the five, of them all.

  • That interview was the most nerve-racking moment of my career.

  • Superlativo + present perfect + ever: the funniest show I've ever watched (o show mais engraçado que já assisti). O "já" do português vira ever.
  • One of the + superlativo + plural: one of the busiest airports.
  • Reforço com by far (de longe) e easily: easily the best. Para posições, use ordinal: the second tallest, the third most visited.
  • This is the spiciest dish I've ever tried.
  • Guarulhos is one of the busiest airports in Latin America.
  • She is by far the most experienced engineer on the project.
  • Belo Horizonte is the third largest metropolitan area in Brazil.Belo Horizonte é a terceira maior região metropolitana do Brasil.

Tão... quanto: as + adjetivo + as

  • Gradações: just as (exatamente tão), nearly as ou almost as (quase tão), three times as, twice as (o triplo, o dobro).
  • Diante de substantivos: as many + contável no plural, as much + incontável: as many tickets as, as much money as.
  • Fórmulas prontas: as soon as possible (o quanto antes), as far as I know (até onde sei), as long as (desde que).
  • The new intern is as efficient as anyone on the team.O novo estagiário é tão eficiente quanto qualquer um da equipe.
  • The remake is almost as good as the 1990 version.O remake é quase tão bom quanto a versão de 1990.
  • Rent in Florianópolis costs twice as much as it did five years ago.O aluguel em Florianópolis custa o dobro do que custava cinco anos atrás.
  • As far as I know, the store opens at ten.Até onde eu sei, a loja abre às dez.

Não tão... quanto: not as...as

  • The old laptop is slower than the new one. (comparativo de superioridade)
  • The old laptop is less fast than the new one. (gramatical, mas pouco usado)
  • The old laptop isn't as fast as the new one. (a opção mais natural)
  • The hotel wasn't as clean as the photos suggested.O hotel não era tão limpo quanto as fotos sugeriam.
  • I don't travel as much as I used to.Não viajo tanto quanto antes.
  • The exam wasn't as hard as everyone feared.

Possessivo no lugar do the

Se há um possessivo antes do superlativo (our, her, the city's, Brazil's), ele substitui o the; os dois nunca aparecem juntos.

  • That was our biggest win of the season.

Most sem the: maioria ou intensidade

Sem artigo, most + substantivo significa "a maioria": most students, most days. Com um determinante na sequência, a forma é most of: most of the students, most of her books. A sequência the most of the está errada nesse sentido. Em linguagem formal, most + adjetivo sem the quer dizer "muito, extremamente": a most generous offer.

  • Most tourists visit the falls in the morning.A maioria dos turistas visita as cataratas de manhã.
  • Most of my colleagues cycle to work.

Superlativo de advérbios: the opcional

  • Which of the kids swims (the) fastest?Qual das crianças nada mais rápido?
  • Among all the applicants, he spoke the most clearly.
